This is fantastic. House of Leaves is one of my favorite books. I read it in college, and it scared the crap out of me, but I couldn’t put it down.
I’ve been trying to get better at working with textures in GIMP/Photoshop. How’d you get the image and text to look like they’re pressed into the cover of the book?
Thank you! I used GIMP, and I used the Clothify effect (which I think is under the artistic filters) as well as the Emboss effect (which I don’t think did much really) on the letters and the door. Then I took the eraser tool with about 20% opacity and went over everything randomly to get the faded look 🙂

This is really, really well done. Thanks for the explanation in the comment above on the texture/embossing–didn’t know there was a “clothify” or “emboss” effect at all! I’m also wondering if you started with a picture of a book, because the corners look really “book-y.” Or did you do that yourself somehow? I am a complete GIMP novice, so I don’t know what is/is not possible!
Thanks! I wish I had enough talent to do the book part, but I used a free book cover from deviantart
